Most states have two agencies that regulate animals:
- An agriculture agency
- Usually regulates, under the authority of the State Veterinarian, the importation of exotics and other animals
- Sometimes put in charge of regulating exotic animal ownership
- A natural resources, game or wildlife agency
- Regulates keeping and often importation of native wildlife
- Sometimes put in charge of regulating exotic animal ownership
Other states put a health agency in charge of regulating exotic animal ownership (i.e. Texas State Health Services regulates dangerous wild animals).
