STATE EXOTIC ANIMAL LAW SUMMARY

NOTE: When traveling with an exotic animal a health certificate is usually required for entry in all states, as well as an import permit.  A few exceptions are granted for interstate import for certain purposes.

There are two types of state laws: bills that are passed by the legislature and rules or regulations that are adopted by a state agency.

Exotic animal laws are usually enforced by a state Department of Agriculture or a state Department of Wildlife or Fish and Game, but are sometimes regulated by a state Health Department.  While we strive to have the latest information, laws are constantly changing, so please verify the information before getting an exotic.   Also remember to check with your county, township, city and homeowner's association as applicable to check local legality.
