STATE AGENCIES

Most states have two agencies that regulate animals:

  • An agriculture agency
    • Usually regulates, under the authority of the State Veterinarian, the importation of exotics and other animals
    • Sometimes put in charge of regulating exotic animal ownership

  • A natural resources, game or wildlife agency
    • Regulates keeping and often importation of native wildlife
    • Sometimes put in charge of regulating exotic animal ownership

Other states put a health agency in charge of regulating exotic animal ownership (i.e. Texas State Health Services regulates dangerous wild animals).
